The NYTimes continues to dazzle every day with new interactive features and changing the way we read news. In the Science Times today, there is an "article" about Charles Darwin.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/02/09/science/20090209-darwin-evolution-documents.html
It highlights quotes from the actual text, and the author has written commentary. I could conceive of a new service that has a scientist or scientists highlight and comment on a journal article in this manner. It would save a lot of time for the reader and allow him to become knowledgeable very quickly.
The API search can only improve upon what the NYTimes is doing - if only they can find a way to actually make money. The public (especially my generation) expects free content. In a recent discussion about Google and whether they owe newspapers money, almost every comment dismisses the idea as ridiculous. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/04/virtual-face-off-what-does-google-owe-newspapers/?scp=2&sq=publisher&st=cse
The STM industry and books seems to have contained this all right, but I wonder if newspapers can ever turn this around. The music industry did, and now people pay for music, but I'm not sure that's a fair comparison since their content was never legally free.
