A real "workflow" solution: BrainNavigator

BrainNavigator is a new product that we are unveiling at SfN. This was developed in partnership with the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Elsevier Labs and Elsevier Book Publishing division have done a great work on this.

As my colleague Johannes Menzel states "BrainNavigator will change the way Neuroscience research is conducted".

In STM online publishing the buzz has been around "workflow". If you really want to see a workflow solution, you need to check this product out. BrainNavigator is one of the best examples of the workflow solution for researchers.

Limitations of Pubmed: while being the most complete database of biomed publications, it has a major drawback: it is just publications-centered, not people centered. Even Hubmed, which is a re-engineering of Pubmed do not cover the people aspect. However the connection between people is an essential element for future collaboration, for knowing who works in the same area as who, etc.
Limitations of social networks: Every member of any social network knows it, the “friend” or “contact” status doesn’t always reflect a real-life situation. In my LinkedIn profile or in my Facebook profile, I have “friends” and “contacts” I never saw once in my life. A tool centered only on true relation between people could be welcome. via Personomics

Information Silos and SiloBreaker

Paula J Hane has a good review of SiloBreaker's "intelligent" solution in Information Today.

Few years ago I had the pleasure working with and meeting SiloBreaker team. They understand the information industry's problem well and they execute on it quickly. They are one of the few companies like Talis and the one in Mountain View that understand what to do with information overload, how to provide insight and extract meaning from the information.

As Daniel Pollack from Outsell states in the review "findability" is increasingly important. And for R&D professionals "findability for solutions" is crucial for their R&D investments decision.

Findability dilemma and providing answers and solutions

Jean Bedord's summary of KM World & Intranets 2007 Conference hits few important points. She highlights the value that semantic web and faceted search bring to improving user experience and findability.

When we search, we are all looking for answers and solutions, and we are not there yet....
